Mark Sykes (Hamden, CT)
$13,173
After whittling Lugi Grilla down in heads up play, Sykes wins the tournament with a scoop. He holds A 5 7 Q and when a 7 hits the river, Sykes pair of 7s takes the high and 7 5 3 2 A wins the low.
Sykes tournament hinged on his Day 1 survival when he was down to 2,400 with the limits at 200/400. "They kept doubling me up," says the former professor of clinical psychology turned poker pro. "I got lucky, ran well and chipped back up."
Sykes says he's not an Omaha 8 (OE) regular and decided to play the tournament "for fun."
Sykes takes home the engraved Borgata trophy and $13,173 for the win.
